Who we are
SUDATA (Sydney University Data Society) is a student-run club at the University of Sydney. This website is maintained by the SUDATA technical team and is used to share information about events, sponsors, and career opportunities.
What we collect
If you accept the cookie banner, we store an anonymous random ID in a cookie named _vid that persists for 12 months. This ID has no connection to your name, email address, or any other personal information.
Using this ID we record:
- Which pages you visited
- Which links you clicked (e.g. sponsor websites, event signups)
- The page you came from (referrer)
- The approximate time of each visit
If you decline, we use a temporary session ID instead that resets when you close the tab. The same visit data is still recorded, but you cannot be recognised across separate visits.
What we do not collect
- No name, email address, or login credentials
- No payment or financial information
- No IP address stored in our database
- No data shared with or sold to third parties
Why we collect it
Analytics data helps the SUDATA exec team understand which pages and content are most useful to visitors — for example, which sponsor opportunities or events get the most engagement. This informs how we structure the site and what we report to sponsors.
Data retention
The _vid cookie expires after 12 months. Analytics records in our database are kept for up to 12 months and then deleted.
Your choices
You can decline the cookie banner on your first visit. You can also change your mind at any time by clearing your browser cookies and localStorage, which will reset the banner on your next visit.
